Monday, February 17th

  • Travel Day

  • Depart: Honolulu at 1:05pm

  • Flight: HA445

Tuesday, February 18th

  • Arrive in Auckland at 9:20pm 

  • Gather baggage and retrieve rental vans

  • Travel to marae in Tāmakimakaurau (Auckland)

  • Protocol upon arrival

  • Moemoe - hoʻomākaukau for an early day of travel the next day to Taharoa

Arrival Day

Wednesday, February 19th

  • Leave marae at Tāmakimakaurau (Auckland)

  • Travel to Taharoa

  • Will make pit stops for food along the way 

  • Pōwhiri 3pm

  • Protocol upon arrival

  • Kai (lunch) 

  • Jump in vans for an huakaʻi around Taharoa

  • Pule & Protocol by the ocean 

  • Huakaʻi Mākaʻikaʻi -  “Mobile Intro to ʻĀina of Taharoa”

  • Hoʻi to marae - Set up hale and sleeping areas

  • Kai (dinner) 

  • Kilo lani - Star gazing

Huakaʻi to Taharoa

Thursday, February 20th

  • Kaupapa:  Mahinga Whenua

  • Fishing crew 4am-6am (everyday, designated crew will head out to holoholo)

  • Mālama i ke ahi (everyday, designated fire crew to wake up, chop wood, stoke & tend the fire throughout the morning/night) 

  • Keiki Program- 9:00am -12:00pm

    • It is important to feed the minds and wairua of our keiki while us adults are engaging in this kaupapa. This wānanga is as much for them, as it is for us. Everyday, there will be a keiki program for our keiki to participate in. Other local Māori kids and whānau will keep our keiki entertained with fun activities and huakaʻi.

  • Kōrero from local speakers

  • Huakaʻi to Māori homesteading initiative 

  • This initiative is focused on building homesteads for Māori families in efforts to help more whānau return home from the cities and live on and with the whenua. While here, our kuleana will be to kōkua with making māla for the local communities and whānau who will be living in these homesteads. Be prepared to work! Huli ka lima a lalo!

Mahinga Whenua

Friday, February 21st

  • Kaupapa:  Mahinga Moana

  • Fishing crew 4am-6am (everyday, designated crew will head out to holoholo)

  • Mālama i ke ahi (everyday, designated fire crew to wake up, chop wood, stoke & tend the fire throughout the morning/night) 

  • Keiki Program - 9:00am -12:00pm

  • Voyaging Panel- kōrero from guests speakers

  • Kōrero from kūpuna speaking about the sand mining in Taharoa 

  • Huakaʻi to Kawhia (50 min drive)

  • Kawhia is on the other side of the bay from Taharoa. It is a very significant place where the Tainui waka which brought the Tainui to Aotearoa rests buried in the sand. The first māla of kalo and kumara is also said to originate from Kawhia. We will huakaʻi to these sites and also get fish & chips! (said to be the best).

Mahinga Moana

Saturday, February 22nd

  • Kaupapa:  Mahinga Kai

  • Fishing crew 4am-6am (everyday, designated crew will head out to holoholo)

  • Mālama i ke ahi (everyday, designated fire crew to wake up, chop wood, stoke & tend the fire throughout the morning/night) 

  • Keiki Program - 9:00am -12:00pm

  • Canning Workshop

  • Kai (dinner) 

  • Kilo lani - Star gazing

MahingaKai

Sunday, February 23rd

  • Pack up belongings and clean marae

  • Late breakfast/ brunch 

  • Leave Taharoa and travel to marae in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton) 

  • Arrive and will have a sort welcome

  • Protocol upon arrival

  • Free day to holoholo

  • Kai (dinner) -  6:00-6:30pm

Huakaʻi to Kirikiriroa

Monday, February 24th

  • Visit to the University of Waikato

  • University Pōwhiri

  • This will be the first day of academics for the University of Waikato. There will be a pōwhiri to welcome all the students on to campus. We will be attending and participating in this pōwhiri as a hui. 

  • Protocol upon arrival 

  • 9am-1pm - Tour the University and connecting with academics

  • 1pm - free day

  • Kai (dinner) at the marae

University of Waikato

Tuesday, February 25th

  • Kōrero with Haki’s colleagues and make pilina

  • Afternoon - free time to shop and holoholo

  • Get to airport for those returning to Hawaiʻi

  • Departure 11:30pm

  • Flight HA 446
