Application for the
2022 Wahi Kūpuna Internship Program is now CLOSED

Important dates and deadlines for internship applicants:
  1. Internship Dates: June 27 - July 29, 2022 (work days are from Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week)​.
  2. Application Deadline: Applications and all supplemental materials must be received by March 7, 2022.
  3. Interviews: March 21 - March 25, 2022 
  4. Notification Letters: Sent out by March 31, 2022

Goals

The primary goal of the Wahi Kūpuna Internship Program is to increase the number of Hawaiians and Kama‘āina in the field of cultural resource management through scientific and Hawaiian cultural mentoring, professional development, education, and applied field experiences. The program also focuses on conducting community based research both on and off Kamehameha Schools legacy lands.

Eligibility & Application
​Process

Emerging professionals and college students (undergraduate or graduate) currently enrolled in any of the Community Colleges or Universities in Hawai’i are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to emerging professionals and students in the fields of Hawaiian Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, Geography, or related resource management fields. Preference will also be given to students with ties and commitments to live and work in Hawai’i.

The application process is used to inform the WKIP Selection Committee about your background, interest and skills. Upon review of your completed application and supplemental materials, you will be notified of your application status. If you are selected as a semi-finalist, a personal interview will be conducted by the WKIP Selection Committee.

Step 1: Fill out the 2022 Application Form

Step 2: Email the required supplemental materials to Momi Wheeler at momi@huliauapaa.org. 
  1. Resume
  2. Latest college transcript (Official and unofficial transcripts are accepted)
  3. Answer the following essay questions (Please limit your essay to two pages double spaced).
    1. What are your academic and career interests/goals and how will participation in this program help you achieve those goals?
    2. What motivates you to work on wahi kūpuna stewardship efforts in Hawai‘i?
    3. What do you feel is the biggest threat to Hawai‘i's cultural resources and how would you try to solve this problem?
    4. Explain why you feel you are particularly qualified for this program?

Step 3: Submit letters of recommendation
  1. Two letters of recommendation (1 academic and 1 professional). Please use the Recommendation Form template. ​
  2. All letters of recommendation will need to be emailed to Momi Wheeler at momi@huliauapaa.org.
