Packing List

Listed below is a suggested packing list that also lists some essential/required items needed for this trip. Please pay attention to the items noted *required as it will be important for you to have these items during your trip. Please note that through our booking benefits, you are allotted two complimentary check-in bags; however, we must also consider the space needed to fit everyone's luggage in the vans, as well as making space in the marae. If checking in luggage, please try to consolidate your belongings into one check-in if possible.

  • Valid Passport (*required) ensure that your passport is up to date and valid.  Note - you can get a passport without having your ticket booked. Make an appointment at you local post office. Get this ahead of time!

  • NZeTA (*required) - this is required for travel to Aotearoa. Get this ahead of time! Visit the “NZeTA” page on this site for more information on what this is and how to get it.

  • Driver License (*required) - for our van drivers, this is required and especially important to remember to have with you

  • Sets of clothes for the duration of your trip - note, the marae we will be staying at do not have washing facilities. During the last few days while we’re in the city, we may have an opportunity to go to the cleaners to wash clothes during your free time. However, it is highly suggested to bring enough clothes for the duration of your stay.

  • Marae attire (*required) - when visiting the different marae and participating in the pōwhiri, appropriate clothing is a must.

    • Kāne: long pants and shoes (if you are speaking). Can wear shorts and slippers.

    • Wāhine: longer skirts or dresses that cover your knees. Not expected to wear shoes, nice slippers/sandals are okay.

    • Colors are encouraged! - no need all black attire. Māori appreciate our colors.

    • Nice formal or traditional hats (pāpale lauhala) are acceptable. NO baseball/ trucker hats.

    • Jewelry is encouraged

  • ʻAʻahu - during pōwhiri and other protocols, adorning yourself in ʻaʻahu and/or taonga is appropriate

    • taonga (suggested but *not required) - if you have any taonga you would like to wear, hiki nō as it is appropriate for pōwhiri.

  • Warm clothes, jackets, sweaters, etc. - we will be visiting Aotearoa during their warmer season, but it’s always good to come prepared with a jacket to keep you warm incase needed

  • Lole lā hana - clothes that you’ll be able to work in, especially for the day we’ll be visiting the homestead and creating māla for the whanau.

  • Medications (*required) - pack any medications you or your keiki may need. For those who are prone to getting car sick, consider packing any car/motion sickness remedies you may have as car rides may be long.

  • Personal makana (suggested) - while we will have a collective makana to gift to all the marae, tūpuna, whanau, guest speakers, and wahi we will visit with on behalf of our entire hui; if you want to pack and carry with you personal makana to gift to folks as the feeling arises, hiki nō! Personal makana for the people you make pilina with is always good to have!

  • Holoholo gear (lawaiʻa) (suggested) - every morning while in Taharoa, there will be an opportunity to holoholo. If you find yourself wanting to join the holoholo crew to catch our kai, you may consider packing gear such as tabis and perhaps a headlamp. Holoholo begins at 4am every morning.
